Smoke alarm compliance in North Lakes
North Lakes homes feel too new to have a problem. Most of them have one anyway, and for a reason that surprises people.
New enough to feel safe, old enough to fail
North Lakes began as a master-planned community: the project commenced in April 1999, and the suburb filled in through the 2000s and 2010s. So the housing is genuinely modern — which is exactly why people here assume their alarms are fine.
They often are not. Interconnection only became compulsory for new builds from 1 January 2017. A house built in 2004, or 2010, or 2015 was never required to have linked alarms. It very likely has hardwired 240V alarms, properly installed, that sound individually and nothing more.

A 2010 North Lakes home typically fails twice over: the alarms are not interconnected, and at fifteen years old they are well past the ten-year maximum age the regulation sets. Either one on its own makes the house non-compliant.
How to check yours in two minutes
- Press and hold the test button on one alarm. If only that alarm sounds, they are not interconnected.
- Look at the body of the alarm for a manufacture or expiry date — usually on the back or around the rim. Over ten years old means it needs replacing regardless.
If only one sounds, that is the whole issue in a sentence: a fire in the garage will not wake a child at the other end of the house.
Hardwired already? That changes the options
North Lakes homes frequently have existing 240V hardwired alarms. Replacing hardwired units is licensed electrical work, so I bring in the electrician I work with and it comes back as one quote with his work as a separate line item at his rate.
I will also price the wireless alternative beside it. Sealed ten-year interconnected alarms need no cabling and no ceiling damage, and in a lot of houses it is the cheaper answer even where wiring already exists.
