What smoke alarm compliance costs
A flat number you can make a decision from, published rather than quoted on request. Including the cases where I would tell you to do it yourself.
Flat price, published
A standard three-bedroom single-storey house needs four alarms: one in each bedroom and one in the hallway connecting them. A four-bedroom needs five. A two-storey needs one per storey on top of the bedrooms. That is why the price is structured per alarm past four rather than a single number that quietly stops being fair.
What is included
- The alarms themselves — sealed ten-year photoelectric, wirelessly interconnected, AS 3786:2014
- Installation, with no cabling through your roof and no patching afterwards
- Testing of every unit, including the interconnection between them
- A dated report with a photograph of each alarm in place and its expiry visible
Why not an hourly rate
Because you cannot make a decision from an hourly rate. A flat number means you know what the job costs before I arrive, and there is no conversation about how long it took once I am in your roof. If the house needs more alarms than four, that is the $65 each above, and I will tell you the total before starting rather than after.
Hardwired alarms are quoted separately
If your place already has 240V hardwired alarms that need replacing, that is licensed electrical work and it needs a licensed electrician. I bring in the sparky I work with, and you get one quote from me with his work as its own line item at his rate. Nothing for you to arrange and no second trade to chase.
I will also price the wireless option alongside it, because in most houses it is the cheaper and less invasive answer — no rewiring, no ceiling damage.
What about doing it yourself?
You can. The alarms are sold retail and fitting them is not complicated. Two things people underestimate: getting the positions right under the regulation, which is specific about hallways and storeys, and the paperwork — if you are a landlord or selling, an undocumented install does not help you evidence compliance.
If you are an owner-occupier who is handy and just wants the house safe before January, buying a six-pack and putting them up yourself is a perfectly sensible thing to do. I would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.
