Smoke alarm compliance in Redcliffe

Redcliffe is one of the oldest settled parts of Queensland, and its housing shows it. For smoke alarms that mostly means a full upgrade - which is more straightforward than it sounds.

Older housing, simpler answer

The Redcliffe peninsula has been settled far longer than the estates inland, and a good deal of its housing stock is older post-war homes alongside decades of unit development. Almost none of it predates the rule that matters: interconnected photoelectric alarms only became compulsory for new builds from 1 January 2017.

In practice that makes Redcliffe straightforward. If your place has not been rebuilt or substantially renovated in the last decade, assume it needs the full set, and assume the existing alarms are the older individually-sounding type.

Older homes, and why wireless suits them

Older ceilings are exactly where you do not want someone running new cable. Sealed ten-year photoelectric alarms with wireless interconnection need no wiring at all, which means no holes cut through older plaster or fibro, no patching, and no repainting afterwards.

It also means no electrician is required for the install, which keeps the cost to the flat price rather than a licensed electrical job.

Ionisation alarms

Older homes are where the obsolete type still turns up. If your alarm has a radioactive trefoil symbol or mentions Americium on the back, it is an ionisation alarm — explicitly not acceptable under the current standard, whatever its age.

Units and townhouses

The requirement follows the dwelling, not the building: every bedroom, the hallway connecting them, and each storey. A two-bedroom Redcliffe unit usually needs three alarms rather than four, which is priced accordingly rather than rounded up.

What it costs

$440 Standard 3-bedroom home, up to 4 alarms, supplied and fitted with a photo record. Smaller units quoted lower; $65 per extra alarm above four.

Redcliffe has a high proportion of rental and investment property. If that is you, your obligation began in 2022 and repeats before every tenancy — see landlords and property managers. Full pricing · The rules
